The Definition of Bodybuilding
02.21.2011 11:17:02

bod·y·build·ing [bod-ee-bil-ding]

–noun the act or practice of exercising, lifting weights, etc., so as to develop the muscles of the body.

Here is a question. Who is a bodybuilder? It turns out anyone who works out is a bodybuilder. We sometimes attach titles to ourselves and other people to categorize. The good news about this one is that it is a positive thing and no one can be excluded. A bodybuilder isn’t necessarily a huge muscle bound giant that scares little children. Anyone of any age can develop their body into a healthy state that reflects their goals for appearance. The beauty of this activity is that you can make yourself look several different ways and excel in different physical activities. Almost any route you take will add health and supplement the joy in your life.

When I train clients, I wait for the most important statement. Mostly, it isn’t mentioned in the very beginning, but as time progresses, they almost always mention it. What is it? “I feel good”. Not “I look good”. Many people start their journey with an appearance in mind. I was one of those people. If they are training consistently and eating healthfully the true reward comes from within. The feeling of health is a much greater reward than how other people perceive you. One chooses their own joy. It isn’t brought about by others. The human body, however, when unhealthy cannot correctly produce energy or hormones which can create several bad symptoms making it difficult for one to choose to enjoy life. The statement comes eventually and I have a sigh of relief knowing my client has finally found the true benefit.

It is funny too. Many of my clients start out by saying. I want to get into shape, but not get as big as you. I don’t really think I am THAT big. I just train and wait patiently for the statement; it always comes. Although, once someone starts to feel healthy, they don’t want it to end. If one is not careful, they may become a Bodybuilder.

I thank God for all he has done for us.

A Brief… Maybe Not Brief Introduction
02.14.2011 04:16:17

First of all, I would like to thank Brad and Elaine for allowing space for me to share my journey. I would also like to thank anyone who reads my blog.

I suppose I should start with an introduction. I have a long history with lifting. I was a bodybuilder before I even really knew what that was. My transformation started with a simple goal and, well, kind of kept going. I started when I was a kid. I was overweight and very depressed. I tried every wrong method to lose body fat. It was as though I was following a manual on “How Not To”. I was successful, but training became a compulsion. I didn’t take any time off; seven days a week, three hundred sixty five days a year… not kidding. I learned more and more about nutrition, training principles, and my own body as years progressed. After spending about five years hitting my head against the wall, I learned some valuable applications regarding my body and how to use that to my advantage. At that time I stared seeing great results! I have never used any harmful or illegal substances to attain results. I have been approached to purchase and also accused of using, but I never have. When I was younger, I was approached by several bodybuilding competitors who told me I should compete, but it wasn’t my time yet. I began Personal Training to spread some knowledge to those who needed help as I did when I was younger. I have been a PT for about eight years. I started and currently train at Gold’s Gym in Arlington and Marysville, Washington.

I have been lifting for close to twenty years and only recently have begun stepping on stage. My first show was the 2009 Ironman.  I have had much support from friends and competitors. While I am still a “newby”, I have a good foundation at this sport due to my experience with the iron. My goal is to continue to improve and go as far as I possibly can.

I have a beautiful Wife, Shannen, and two adorable little girls, Daynika and Chloe, and they are all very supportive in my journey. I would not be nearly as successful as I have been without them. Their love strengthens me and my resolve.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog. I hope anyone reading my blog will continue to follow me in the future.

I thank God for all he has done for us.

Owen
