Determination

The following writing was sent to me by a female Ironman figure competitor who I have come to know over the years from her personal journey competing.  Her husband, Brandin Haynes wrote it for an english class he was taking and I was so moved by it I wanted to share it with you.  So with both Kim and Brandon's permission, I submit it below to you for your enjoyment in it's entirity.  My hope it that it will motivate and inspire you as you train for the stage.

Paper #3

                                                Soldiers, Recruits, and Determination

The alarm sounds, and like reveille wakes the troops, this soldier is prepared for battle. Not a battle over territory or ideology, but an internal struggle of uncompromising will, strength, and determination in the face of adversity. She squints her eyes, and her pupils dilate as the first rays of morning sun embrace her face. An internal spark flickers, igniting a kindling of desire. The flames of determination begin to fill her as she prepares to wage war on the many obstacles she is about to face, and neither man nor beast dares to stand in the way of her goal. This morning marks a new beginning, as does every morning, and this war-zone is the dimly-lit confines of a gym weight-room.

Upon entering the battlefield, a blast of humid, musty air invades her nostrils, and the clanging and clacking of the weight-room plates are in perfect cadence. Surveying the equipment, our heroine hones-in on her first target. Excitement begins to bubble in the pit of her stomach in anticipation of the pain that she is about to endure. Contrary to popular belief, determination is a visible, an almost tangible concept. To see it, one only needs to look into the face of our heroine as she pushes through the pain. Her eyes are fixed on the horizon, focused on what must be a pleasurable experience, something to distract her from the agony. Jaw clinched, she  keeps in stride, one repetition after another, despite the beads of sweat that are rolling down the contours of her face and to the floor. As fatigue sets in, and her muscles begin to burn, our warrior calls-in reinforcements from the ranks of determination. Much to her relief, the reality of failure disappears, thanks to this new found cavalry of internal fortitude. Adrenaline is rushing through her veins now as her heart beats like a machine-gun. Victorious, our femme-fatale may have won the fight, but she hasn't won the war. Many enemies remain, and she zeroes-in on another victim. Foe after foe falls to the heroine, and an almost euphoric sensation erupts within her, due to the on set of endorphins, coupled with her determined focus to achieve a goal she set-out to accomplish.

Many months before these battles were executed, a plan-of-attack was put into place. Like a general commanding her troops, our warrior takes command of her destiny, armed with a three-staged plan for success. The first stage is obvious, identify the goal. This seemingly simple task  must be precise, realistic, and will become her motivating factor in the face of adversity. Also important to note is her need to keep a detailed mental picture of the goal at the forefront of her mind, capable of maintaining her focus when she is faced with obstacles. Stage two requires a great deal of forethought as our general must evaluate the amount of time needed to reach her goal, in conjunction with the amount of effort she is willing to devote to attain her goal. Finally, stage three is the most time consuming and exhausting, yet the most rewarding. This step is known as the action stage. Through a daily regimen of focus and determination, inch-by-inch her goal becomes more attainable.

In the civilian sector determination is classified as a firm purpose or a fixed position, and is in relation to the word determine. Though these examples are adequate for day-to-day use, they don't display the needed emphasis to describe the internal fortitude and intense motivation required to reach our heroine's goal of physical fitness. In the late fifteenth century the Latin noun, “derterminare” was defined as a “fixed direction toward a goal,” which is far more accurate in describing a gym soldier of her magnitude.

Now, there is an obvious difference between gym soldiers and gym recruits. Gym recruits are soon-to-be soldiers that have only a drive to accomplish some goal, any goal for that matter. Yet drive is only a small component in the process of determination. Gym recruits have yet to

implement the three stages of success, as described earlier. They unfortunately waste time and energy in an effort to gain progress, lined-up like hamsters on a wheel, eager to go nowhere, sweating and working hard but lacking a plan, and a well defined goal. This is an unthinkable travesty to our warrior, punishable by court-marshal. She knows the difference between drive and determination, the necessary desire and planing involved to execute and complete her daily missions in route to her overall goal. Our general is aware that it takes more than an aimless drive to reach your destination, you must know WHERE you are going in order to get there. You don't spontaneously jump into your car and drive without a clue to where you are going.  In addition, some gym recruits tend to congregate near one another and often have strong jaw and tongue muscles. It's this display in lack of focus, that raises eyebrows about the determination of gym recruits, and their need to simply jump into the car and drive.

Determination can be seen on a daily basis, in many animals and many people. Take a small business owner who's up to her eyeballs in IRS taxes, for example. Each day she plugs away at her job, committed to her customers, working tirelessly, determined to earn the chance of a brighter tomorrow and the opportunity to break even. How about a single, working, mother of two difficult teenage daughters? Despite the daughters' troubles with the law and their own selfish, demanding attitudes, their mother thanklessly provides all the necessities they need, displaying  much determination of patience and love. Lastly, is a woman who is the survivor of a grim, sexually assaulted childhood. Determined not to be a lifelong victim of some derelict's macabre fantasy, she refuses to let this event consume her psyche.

So, like the business owner, our heroine is able to work tirelessly toward her goal, like the single mother she is determined and patient with the obstacles that stand in her way, and like the mistreated child she is determined to take control of her own life. Our warrior posses all of these traits because she was, and is, all of these women, and most importantly to me, she is my wife!

Spray Tanning at the Washington Ironman
07.06.2010 07:30:49

Onstage Image is the official spray tanning company that we are endorsing for the 2010 Washington Ironman.  John & Roxana Kreklo are the owners and will take excellent care of you.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   512-828-1437   www.onstageimage.net   I give them my highest recommendation.  They will be available at the Ironman to give you a professional stage tan. They will  be backstage at the venue doing spray tanning and touch ups.  You will need to make an apppointment with them and pay a fee.

We at Craig Productions try to take the guess work out of as many things as possible for you.  We chose John & Roxana because they are professionals in what they do.  I know that when you make an appointment with them they are going to take care of you like you should be taken care of.  They are not going to soak you financially.  They are going to give you what you are paying for.  I know that if it is your daughter getting sprayed she is not being taken advantage of.

I have competitors ask me all the time if I think getting a spray tan is really worth it.  I think so.  I addressed this in a previous blog for the Emerald Cup and I am rewriting it because I think it is something alll competitors should know.  If you have ever tried hand tanning yourself you would understand why.  It really is an art.  It is that extra mile that is worth going to showcase all of the hard work you have done!  Tanning colour can get in all the wrong creases and also make you look like you have rolled in mud if it is not applied properly.  It can be the difference in a first place win and a last place win.  Yes, it really is that important!

Spray tanning can be done right and it can be done very wrong.  When choosing who to give your money to here are the questions I feel you should ask the tanning artist:

!.  Are they experienced in competition colour?  The artist must account for the bright stage lights.  A regular booth tan from a salon just wont do.  It is not an everyday colour that you want like a "Mystic Tan".  Oh no, it is much darker than that.

2.  Is it a woman who sprays the women and a man who sprays the men?  This is a VERY IMPORTANT question to ask.  Do not accept that men tanning artists spray the women, that that is how its always done.  Oh no!  Take note of this!  There are some tanning artists out there that will tell you that - mostly men - but hey, they are hoping you are going to believe it!  "Cant blame a guy for trying", most all guys will say.  They will tell you that you can have a disposable suit if you feel uncomfortable.  Well, sure, but everyone knows that most everyone gets sprayed in the buff.  Well, of course, because you are wearing itty bitty posing suits.  I am here writing this to tell you that no one but the tanning artist should be seeing you naked unless you have invited another person to oversee what is going on!  See how adamant I am about this!!  Now you know and if you are told any different I recommend that you do not get sprayed by that person!  After all it is your choice who you are giving your hard earned money to!

3.  What does the price you are paying for your tan include?  Sometimes tanning artists will charge you 1 fee and then tell you you will need 4 - 5 coats to get as dark as you need to which means you end up spending $500.00 for a stage tan.  This is RIDICULOUS!!  The fee you pay - average is $100.00 here in Washington - should include your finished competition color which can take a couple of coats on some people.  Now this is if you don't shower.  If you do shower - sometimes you just can't stand it between prejudging and the night show - there is another fee.  I'm pretty sure the standard is $35.00.  Sometimes it is just worth the extra fee.  Those of you that have competed before know what I mean.

4.  How should I prepare myself for my appointment?  Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!  Go to a beauty supply store and get a pair of ( approximate cost is $2.00 - $5.00) exfoliating gloves.  Shower right before your appointment and use the exfoliating gloves.  DO NOT USE any lotions or deodorants after you shower.  Just bare skin only!  Nope, no perfumes either.  You want the tanning colour to completely adhere to your skin.  Anything additional can cause the colour to turn green or adhere funny.

There you have it.  These are the things that I think you should know about a competition colour.  If you have any questions about tanning feel free to call me.  I am happy to answer any competition questions you have!  ~Elaine~

Posing, posing, posing
06.28.2010 13:48:14

"What a poser!"  In some circles that is a negative connotation but in our world of physique it is quite the compliment!!!  As a physique competitor you are always posing.  Everytime you see a mirror you strike a pose.  After you do a set in the gym, you are flexing, posing.  It is a part of you.  Ingrained.  It is what you do.  The thrill of being able to do a lat spread when most of the world doesn't even know what it is. To stand up on stage under scrutiny of an audience in a small posing suit executing quarter turns with complete confidence and a smile on your face.  To walk in 5" heels and not fall flat on your face.  To perform a flawless bodybuilding or fitness routine in 1 - 2 minutes.  To pump up and flex in preparation for your moment!

This weekend for me has been a wonderful weekend of Posing seminars.  I LOVE posing seminars!!  I had the priviledge of attending 2 of them.  Some of the girls were new, some were veterans.  One common thread of both seminars was camraderie.  Everyone was there to help other athletes and to better themselves.  They were there to share training and competition experiences.  To socialize and get to know one another.  To form friendships.  And to pose.

I always leave a posing seminar exhilarated.  It energizes me to focus on the show I am working on.  I think of all the athletes dieting, training, posing, preparing to step on stage.  Our stage. I want their experience to be everything they had hoped for.  I want them to be able to pose!  So I thank you for allowing me to be a part of your seminars and your posing!

In physique, the title of Poser is worn with pride!

Entering Open and Masters
03.17.2010 11:28:47

I am addressing this because so many of you are calling and telling me the online registration won't let you enter both the open and the masters in your division, however some of you have sneaked through so you will be receiving a refund check in the mail.  At the Emerald Cup, or any Craig Productions event we only allow you to enter 1 division.  You need to choose whether you will be in the Open class or Master's class.  Yes at some shows you have competed at they have allowed you to do so.  This is purely a promoters decision.  Women have a unique situation in that they can enter a Bikini division, a Figure division, a Fitness division AND a Bodybuilding division if they so choose.  But they can't enter both the Master's and the Open division of those contests.  Why?  Because they are both sub-divisions of the same sport.  The key words are sub-divisions and sport.  Open & Masters are sub-divisions and Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure & Bikini are sports. At the Emerald Cup for the men we only have the Emerald Cup Bodybuilding Open & Masters so men only have one choice.  You can also enter Mixed Pairs because it is considered a different sport.

At Craig Productions we do this because we feel it makes the show run much better and makes it more exciting.  Sure we would make more money because you would have to pay for 2 entries but that is not what we are about.  We are about running the best show that we possibly can and providing every athlete with the best competition experience that we possibly can!  So...you have to make a choice.

G-Force Hardcore tears Quad =(
03.08.2010 13:16:57

I got the call today.  Our own blogger and Queen of the Craig Productions pump-up-room Gerri Davis tore her left quadricep!!!  Her husband Dan called to give me the horrible news.  She was pressing 950lbs - yes that is right - leg pressing 950lbs when it tore!  After assuring me that she was okay and not in the hospital and that she was actually walking around today he told me what she was most upset about is that she won't be able to guest pose at the Emerald Cup.  He said her leg was very swollen and she sees the surgeon next week to find out all of the details but that she was sorry she wouldn't be able to guest pose.  Can you imagine?  All she is going through and she is thinking about her guest posing?!!!!  And then he added that she would still be there to run the pump-up-room!!  Let's just take this one day at a time!!  No one can EVER replace you Gerri - but we first and foremost care about you recovering!!  We love you Gerri and I will keep everyone posted on her status!!

You don't have to be entering one of our shows.  I am happy to answer anything to the best of my ability.

Free seminar for igure, Fitness & Bikini Women February 20th!
02.09.2010 10:56:25

I am going to be hosting FREE Posing Seminar for Women only at Gold's Gym, Bothell, WA on Saturday, February 20th from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.  It is geared toward those of you considering competing and those of you that have made the decision to compete or have competed in a show.  I will go over 1/4 turns, 1/2 turns, and how to walk in high heels.  It is a hands on seminar so make sure to bring a pair of high heeled shoes!  You MUST sign up in advance.  I can only take 20 women and in order to reserve your spot, you need to email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

I am excited about this seminar because all of the spring NPC shows here in the Northwest will be taking place shortly and the excitement is building.  I love how in Washington we have seminars that take place to foster camaraderie with competitors.  The staff at Gold's Gym Bothell, that I train at gets behind it's competitors and the various shows!  There are ALOT of competitive bodybuilders that train there.  I was talking with Erik the manager and we were bouncing around the idea of having a posing seminar and he said I could host one at Golds.  We finalized the date around aerobics classes and now it's a reality.  Because it has a time limit of 2 hours, I wanted to focus on the basics of posing and walking in heels for Figure, Fitness & Bikini women.  If you are a bodybuilder man/woman and are interested in learning basic posing 1/4 turns and mandatories email me also.  If I get enough interest in that, I have a few bodybuilders that said they would love to participate in a seminar for bodybuilders and I could schedule another date for that.  We'll have to see how it goes.

Feb. 15th update:  NPC judge and trainer Deb Houck will join me helping everyone at the seminar.  This is a real treat!  Deb is back from my time in the 80's competing and is a former North American champion.  Her physique put mine to shame!  If I can extract an old photo from her I will post it for you.  She has trained alot of top Northwest and National Champions.  I'm so excited she will be there!

Remember you MUST email me to reserve a spot!  Elaine Craig:    This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Our bloggers
01.30.2010 12:07:42

Thank you to Dave, Diane, Brenda, Julie, Kim, Gerri and Tanji!  I have really enjoyed reading their blogs and getting to know them.  It takes a lot of effort for them to take the extra time to write about their lives and training!  If you the reader will take the time to let them know you are reading their blogs I know they would really appreciate that!  Sometimes I think no one is reading what I write so I slack off and then I get a quick email from someone to let me know they are missing my show updates.  It's just that little kick that will keep me on track with my blog!
