What’s up, America? Hey…just wanted to give you guys a heads-up that we’re setting up a posing and nutrition clinic/class/workshop this coming Sunday at Gold’s Gym in Bothell, I believe. The details will be forthcoming in a later blog and on FB. I’m going to be putting it on for all bodybuilding and figure competitors, along with fellow blogger, Julie Michaelson and Elaine Craig, who will help with the Figure girls. Keep checking back or hit me, Julie, or Elaine up on FB to view the event.
America, once again I gotta vent a little. This past weekend I ran into a competitor friend at Costco. This individual and I kinda got into a little discussion on competition, as in how many shows is enough for someone. And it went a lil’ somethin’ like this…
TOP (The Other Person): “So you’ve done pretty much every show this year haven’t you?”
Me: “Yea…ain’t got much else to do, so I compete.”
TOP: “Are you going to do any more shows this year?”
Me: Yup…pretty much finish out the season. Headin’ over to Spokane in a couple of weeks, then the Ironman, and I’m looking forward to doing Gordon’s new show, the IronMountain, and finally Nic’s show – the Northwest.” Then I’m done.
TOP: “So don’t you think you do too many shows?”
Me: “No.”
TOP: “I mean, you’re at all the shows and you always seem to win. Why don’t you give someone else a chance to win?”
Me: “Hmmm…that’s an interesting concept. Don’t compete so someone else can win. That sounds pretty cool. I think I’ll contact Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and tell them to withdraw from all of the majors since they’ve been dominating them for the past few years. ‘Hey guys…you two can’t compete anymore. You have to give others a chance to win.’ I wonder what they’d say…”
TOP: “You know what I mean. You always win. The judges know you, everybody knows you. You’re the favorite…”
I’m doing my best to remain cool as I’ve heard this and had this conversation many times before over the years. “I’m just doing what I love to do. I don’t tell Tiger how many tournaments he can compete in and I don’t need anyone telling me how many contests I can do.”
TOP: Well, it’s not fair that you keep entering shows that you’ve won multiple times. You should give someone else a chance to win.”
I lost it. “Dude, that’s total #^@#%#!!! I’m a competitor – I compete! I train to win. The people I compete against train to win. The people I train train to win. I don’t know anyone who trains to intentionally lose. And I definitely don’t know anyone who would NOT compete just because they won before. What you’re saying makes no sense. DON’T compete so someone else can win? How about someone else train harder, work smarter, eat better, do more cardio, and take me out? That makes more sense to me!”
The conversation continued but I made my point. As I’m typing this blog I’m watching Rafa Nadal schooling Lopez in the US Open as Rafa looks to win his first Open title. Federer is looking to win his 6th or 7th. Should he now drop out as he’s won so many and give Rafa the edge? Rafa’s #1 on clay, winning literally every clay tourney he’s competed in over the past 3 years. Should he quit? Venus and Serena…should they not defend their couples titles in the Majors or continue to go after the singles since they’ve both dominated over the past 10 years? Hmmm…maybe I should write Jay Cutler and yell at him for attempting to win the Olympia again this year. Oh…wait…he won in 2006, 2007, lost in 2008, and guess what? Came back and WON again in 2009! Ronnie Coleman won 8 in a row. Lee Haney won 8 in a row. Why do I have to quit and let someone else win? That’s dumb. That’s stupid! Yea, I said it!
I’ve talked about this before, America. What’s with local bodybuilding competitions and the talk of not being able to go back to defend your title? Why is it that in literally every other sport the athletes can easily go back and defend their title and no one says anything, but in local bodybuilding it’s taboo if you defend your title more than once, if at all? I wonder if the talk would still be there if I was a consistent 3rd, 4th, or 5th place finisher.
On a quick sidebar…Rafa just took out Lopez and advances to the quarterfinals of the US Open. Get em, Rafa…I’m pullin’ for you. But if you win…well…that’s it – no more! Riiiiight…
I’m out America…hope this puts an end to the talk of competitors who compete! Peace…
