After working for hours trying to figure out how to embed a YouTube video into the blog here I have realized I cannot figure it out...or maybe my patience has just worn out!  So here is a link to a YouTube video I did explaining a bit about where I'm at and where I am heading.  Its a history of my journey thus far and a precursor of so much to come!  Please check it out HERE. But be aware, I am a goofball and have a very dry sense of humor...hahaa ;)

Nothing Great Comes Without Sacrifice!
05.02.2011 05:57:53

Jack Sandberg, a friend and fellow competitor who resides over in Spokane, posted a short motivational/inspirational video on FB on the bodybuilding mindset and lifestyle.  You can watch the whole thing at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-GBxpLQsek&feature=youtube_gdata_player. More than just watching the video and seeing the swollen bodies and listening to the music and getting all pumped up over the incredible physiques, I chose to listen to the words they’re saying.  Is anything coming out of their mouths that make sense or is it just rambling gibberish.  To be perfectly honest, this one was a good one.

If you’ve been a reader of my blog for any time now, you know that I’m into the psychological component more than anything else.  Everything starts with your mind.  We conceive in our minds.  We believe in our minds.  And then we go out and ACT on our thoughts in our mind.  In the video, Kai Green spoke words of truth – truth that I’ve been saying for years and years.  Truth that any athlete with the competitive mindset possesses.  Truth that we hear a lot, read a lot, and possibly even quote a lot on FB these days.  But speaking the truth and living the truth are two different things.  Do you just speak the truth or do you live the truth?

After my last blog I received a text from Big Joe Derousie.  I typically don’t get very many responses.  My blogs aren’t designed for or written for responses.  Many times I’ll even tell you I don’t want a response.  I’m more of the ‘in your face’ person – I want you to think about what you’re doing, and even question why you’re doing it, even if it makes you feel a bit uncomfortable.  I want you to dig deep within your soul and ask, “Is this what I really want?  And am I truly ready to work…no…bust my BUTT for it?”  I want you to ‘get it’ – to get the fact that this is not easy, and many times this is not necessarily fun, but the reward at the end is oh-so-sweet even if no other person gives you accolades or compliments you for a job well done.  I want you to understand that “The challenge is from within, the opponent is yourself, the reward is private, and the victory is having met the challenge!”

Joe’s text read, “Hey Dave, its Joe DeRousie. Just read your last blog. “To be number one you have to train like you’re number 2.”  Bro, first thing I thought of was losing to Roger [Baker] by 1 point at the 09 [Emerald] Cup.  I looked great, but was still 2nd.  That loss was the best thing that could have happened to me.  It pushed me to another level that allowed me to bring that dominant physique to the stage in 2010.  I could have just tried to roll with the momentum I build in 09, but wanted to leave no doubt whose show it was last year!  Everyone still wants to know what I did to make such a jump in a year.  You said it perfect: hard work, discipline, determination, drive desire, focus, and commitment.  Can’t beat that stack if you tried!”  Well said, Joe!

Kai Green, who is, in my opinion one of the most creative bodybuilding posers out there, had some great lines.  You could hear the feeling, the emotion, and the passion in every word he spoke.  I listened to him several times and finally decided to transcribe his words and put them in this blog.

Kai’s first quote said, “You need to get to work in accomplishing your own dream – fulfill your own goals.  There’s something to be said for the person that stands on the side of life watching other people live it vs. being the person that’s out there doing a damn thing.”  Truer words could not have been spoken.  You can put up all the quotes you want on FB, but if you’re not working, then you’re not doing.  And if you’re not doing, then you’re wasting time!  Are you TRULY doing everything you can to make yourself YOUR best?  If you set the bar, then dang it, at the very least jump up to it.  Better yet, jump OVER it and then reset it!  That’s what Big Joe did.  I have no doubt that Joe will be successful at the national level, and then the pro level.  He doesn’t just talk – he acts!

Jay Cutler (at least I believe it was Jay as they didn’t show the person talking but showed a quick clip of Jay…) said, “There’s no secret to it.  If you wanna get bigger, if you wanna get stronger, the only thing holding you back is yourself.”  I’ve got a couple of signs in my gym that ties in to what Jay said.  The first one is, “The greatest challenge you’ll ever face is your own mind.”  The second one says, “The only obstacle preventing you from achieving your goal is the belief that you have obstacles.”  Are you guys gettin’ this?  I’m not trying to motivate you – I’m trying to get in your head – to get you to understand that you, and only you, are ultimately responsible for the physique that steps onstage.  Your trainer is a tool, a resource, a means to an end, but if you put all your trust and faith in your trainer and don’t do your part…well…it’ll show onstage.  This leads us to our third quote by Kai…

“You have to save your own life.  Nobody’s gonna be your savior for you.  So we have to do what we have to do no matter what it is!”  Putting this on ‘paper’ just doesn’t have the same impact that viewing it does.  That’s why I posted the link.  When I watched it I found myself nodding in approval.  When Jeff, my workout partner doesn’t show up, I still train.  When life situations arise, I handle my business and then I train.  Regardless of what happens, I train.  I am the master of my destiny.  You are the master of yours.  Handle y’business!

Finally, Kai ends the talking part with the following quote, “Champions are an example of what happens when you aspire to leave the plane of average thinking…when you dare to dream and you dare to go after that dream and you make these thoughts and ideas become something more than a dream.”  We all have to have that internal push, people – the drive, determination, discipline, desire, focus, sacrifice, and commitment.  We all possess the power to dream…we must dig deep for the power to succeed!  Peace…

Write Down Your Goals!
11.20.2009 23:39:47

Alright so I found something that I HAVE to share with you guys!

I was going through all of my old emails!! I have a terrible (yet sometimes useful) habit of saving all my emails so I have MANY pages of old emails. Well, I figured it would be a good time to go through and clean out my INBOX. Well, I came across a powerful email that proves the importance of goal-setting and WRITING down and reviewing your goals frequently. The part of the email that I'm going to share with you was written September 4th, 2008, a month before my first show.

So here it is...

3.
My long term goal for a year from now is to compete in the Washington Ironman 2009 and place 1st...More specifically I want to really improve my abs and legs for next year's show.

This goal is important to me because I think I have finally found something that I can/want to do for myself that I really enjoy doing. I tend to get very caught up in doing things for other people ALL the time and I tend to neglect myself. I feel that if I keep training, I will be able to finally spend time doing what I want to do and be able to accomplish what I want to accomplish.

I will achieve this goal by...
training hard over the next year
staying organized in order to balance school, work, my social life and training
surrounding myself with positive people at all times
sticking to clean eating through-out the year
staying focused on each task at hand
Overall, attitude is everything and I feel like if I have the right attitude and work hard over the next year, I can place 1st at the 2009 Ironman.

This amazes me because a year later I DID accomplish my goal -- I placed 1st at the 2009 WA Ironman!! My old trainer, Brent, made me write out my goals on a consistent basis and he taught me to stay focused on these goals. So that's what I did. I wrote out my goal for a year down the road and I specifically stated HOW I was going to achieve that goal....and guess what?! I accomplished exactly what I wanted to accomplish. Boy was all that goal-setting worth it! This shows precisely the power of setting goals and writing them down!! Put together an online file or a journal of all of your goals...Write them down SPECIFICALLY! Write down exactly what you will do to make those goals come to life! Setting a goal is not nearly enough. You must put yourself into action and determine HOW you are going to make it happen. Then focus on that each and every day until you finally achieve the goal.

So I've been staying focused on my training/prep. My cardio the last few days has been awesome. I'm busting my butt right now and continue to improve as each week passes! I'm still dreadfully sore from my back session on weds! Let's just say it hurts to lift up my arms because my lats are so sore!! I think this is the most sore that I have ever been -- I'm most definitely taking all of my glutamine and needed protein right now to help my back muscles recover! Today I'm meeting Peter at Snap for shoulders!! Little by little, I'm building that beautiful CAP.  So that's about it for now...

I'm excited for Tanji's workshop tomorrow -- It should be a BLAST and I cannot wait to see all the girls! It's always so great to meet all the women competing and hear their story! Everyone has their own journey and their own reason for competing and I love getting to know where everyone is at in their journey.

Stay Strong. Stay Focused. Let the Lord's Light SHINE!

Diane

“DO OR DO NOT – THERE IS NO TRY!”
10.15.2009 09:51:39

How y'livin America?  I know, I know...y'haven't heard from me in a quick minute - let's just say that I had things to do, places to go, and people to see :).  Actually, I've been busy around the house 'winterizering' all the outdoor things - lawn, deck, benches, siding...you name it, I've been doin' it.  I'm glad to say that all of the outdoor projects are now complete and I've moved inside for the rest of the winter.

I had quite a few people hit me up on when I was gonna get back to blogging - well, I'm baaaaack!!  As I said in my last blog, the goal is to talk to you guys 2-3 times a week, so keep checking back, okay?

I'm starting with a paper that was submitted by my training partner and long-time client and friend, Steve Large.  Years ago at my big gym I had a contest along the lines of the old Bill Phillips contests from Muscle Media 2000.  Steve's paper was one of the best submitted, if not the best, and along with the incredible transformation in his physique, he ended up winning one of the grand prizes (no...you don't need to know what it was - that was a long time ago...)  N-E-Whoo...here's his winning paper.  The funny thing is, it's as relevant today as it was when he wrote it.  Enjoy...

"I started this “Choice, Challenge, Change” contest with the highest hopes of winning.  Just like everyone else I was pumped up and excited about the opportunity to not only get into good shape but also to be paid for my efforts.  I have been going through one of the worst times of my life and this contest was just what I needed to get my mind off my troubles for awhile.  The eight weeks of this contest has been more difficult than I thought it would be.  Staying on course is a challenge and you must be truly committed to achieve the results that you want.

A funny thing happened to me during this challenge.  I not only learned what the effects of good nutrition, cardiovascular training, and weight training (when used properly), can have on the body, but I also learned something about myself.  Something that I am very proud to say I have.  Something that I think more and more people are losing in our society.  That is commitment!

We like the idea of being committed to something or to someone and we respect those who are.  We as Americans like to think of ourselves as a committed people.  [Unfortunately that is not the case with many of us.]  We are committed to our marriages yet over 50 percent of them end in divorce.  We like to believe that we are committed to our children, yet it seems that we are leaving them more with day care providers than spending time with them.  We like to believe that we are committed to our health yet we consume more hamburgers, French fries, ice cream and alcohol than any other country.  We are committed to the war against drugs, yet the drug trade has never been more prosperous.  We have a profound commitment to God, yet we’ve kicked him out of school.

How many people start these fitness contests determined to win, and how many actually finish?  I also learned a lot about my fellow gym rats.  I have more respect for some and am disappointed in others.  I think you get the message – Commitment should be made of sterner stuff!

Commitment is a pledge to do.  It is the state of being bound emotionally, intellectually, or physically to a course of action or to another person or persons.  It is an obligation.  IT IS YOUR WORD!

I think the key to commitment at least for me is that; it is your word.  It is your responsibility.  You alone are accountable for everything you do and for everything victory or failure in your life.  I know in today’s world that this is not a popular stance.  Why should we take responsibility for our actions when there are so many other things [and people] to point to and to and blame?  Why should we take the hard road when there is an easier one?  As human beings I’m sre that it is our nature to desire results/rewards as quickly as possible, because as a species we are not very patient.  However, maybe we have gone too far.  In the process are we losing our values?   Are we losing our ability to commit and to keep our commitments?  When things become too easy and too immediate we tend not to appreciate them as much.  Are we becoming spoiled as a nation?  To answer these quests, I think we only need to look at the world around us a see the level of commitment that we as a society have developed.

I beilve this contest has shown me that if you want to experience something in life, do not want it, but rather choose it.  Once the choice is made, then you must be committed to attain the goal.  However, to reach that goal, we must be uniformly committed to each step along the way.  No one step is any more or less essential than the others.  Enjoy each step because each step puts you closer to your goal.  Problems arise when we try to skip steps or find an easier way.

Dave Patterson’s business name and logo, Personal Training Systems“There Are No Shortcuts!” is a statement of fact that rings true in all areas of development.  In the original move Star Wars, there was a character named ‘Yoda’, who in my opinion gave the best advice on how to keep a commitment.  He told Luke Skywalker to “Do or Do Not, There Is No Try!”  A true commitment must be made with that strong of a conviction in order to eliminate any chance of failure.

Once you have made a choice of what you want to experience in life, then you must identify the challenges and make a commitment to achieve that goal.  Then it very soon becomes a matter of breaking it down into steps and walking the passageway to victory, remembering that each step is its own little victory.  This is what worked for me in this contest and I plan to apply this in all areas of my life.  Being truly committed and accepting responsibility for your victories as well as your defeats has its own reward which is given to you each time you look in the mirror.

There are a million macho slogans intended to motivate and inspire people.  There are books and self-help tapes available to encourage you to reach deep inside and find that magic ‘something’ that helps people to continue in their endeavors.  These are helpful in that they can keep you focused.  However the real motivation must come from your level of commitment and what that means to you.

At the beginning of this essay I mentioned that I have been going through one of the worst periods of my life.  Well…I still am.  Nothing has changed, except that I have learned throughout this Choice, Challenge, Change contest that it is my choice on how to deal with my challenges.  And if change is to occur it is dependent solely upon my commitment."

Peace...
The Dr.
